Ingredients:
- Fresh sea mussels (kallummakkaya)
- Rice powder
- Grated coconut 🥥
- Shallots, finely chopped
- Garlic 🧄, minced
- Ginger, minced
- Green chilies , finely chopped
- Curry leaves
- Turmeric powder
- Coriander powder
- Red chili powder
- Garam masala powder
- Salt 🧂 to taste
- Coconut oil for cooking
- Chilly powder and salt slurry (for dipping)
Instructions:
1. Clean the sea mussels thoroughly under cold water, removing any dirt or debris. Keep the shells intact and set them aside.
2. In a bowl, mix rice powder with grated coconut, chopped shallots, minced garlic, minced ginger, chopped green chilies, curry leaves, turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder, garam masala powder, and salt to taste. Mix well to combine all the ingredients.
3. Stuff each mussel shell with the prepared rice mixture, pressing it down gently to fill the shell completely.
4. Heat water in a steamer pot or a large saucepan with a steamer basket.
5. Once the water is boiling, carefully place the stuffed mussels in the steamer basket, making sure they are not overcrowded.
6. Cover the steamer pot with a lid and steam the stuffed mussels for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice filling is cooked through.
7. Remove the steamed mussels from the shells and discard the shells.
8. Dip each steamed mussel in the chilly powder and salt slurry.
9. Heat coconut oil in a pan over medium heat. Once the oil is hot, add the dipped steamed mussels and fry until they turn golden brown and crispy on both sides.
10. Remove from the pan and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess oil.
11. Serve hot as a delicious snack or appetizer!
